Especially at the book store, I'm not sure why but the bookstore almost seems more like a private experience - you just want to look and browse, not necessarily buy right away. But I do like to know where the workers are in case I need to find something. My B&N are pretty good - they are stationed in the middle, ask if I need help and then leave me alone. My Books A Million however is a mess with no workers to be found so I rarely even go there anymore.Karenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13958940283330319507noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5461857684201387821.post-66861055909988898922011-02-27T18:23:21.801-08:002011-02-27T18:23:21.801-08:00Wonderful, thoughtful post! I'm a rabid reader--I know where to find exactly what I want, and if it's not there, I'll go to a desk and order it. And if I'm not after a particular book, I like to browse and buy whatever strikes me. But that's me--I'm a very independent consumer. :-)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17140835320864680932noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5461857684201387821.post-16302375684638190412011-02-26T17:21:14.109-08:002011-02-26T17:21:14.109-08:00I've actually never visited a Powell's Boo...I've actually never visited a Powell's Bookstore before, but it sounds like a nice place to shop. As a bookstore patron, I actually prefer finding my way around the store alone since I usually know the layout of a store like Borders. :) I head for the different areas I'm interested in, but if I don't find what I'm looking for, I know I can always ask one of the staff about it. (It also helps that one of my coworkers at the library works at the Borders I visit since I know I can count on his help. :D)

There was an indie bookstore, Recycled Books, in the city where I attended library school. They had a similar step-back and hands-off way of running the store, and it's been a staple of the city for who knows how long. But as with Borders, I know I can always ask for assistance even if I have to look for the badges of the staff. :)

Really, for me, it could go either way since I love shopping at both types of stores. As long as I do have one of each type of bookstore near me, I think that's the best thing.

Happy reading!DJLhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03251635323616566191noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5461857684201387821.post-30972361558101037462011-02-22T16:16:12.378-08:002011-02-22T16:16:12.378-08:00Very interesting. It can't hurt to have friendly people, and it can be useful!
I was looking at the kobo in Borders, and either he wasn't getting commission or he was friendly, but the man working at the ereader station wasn't pushing the $200 Sony at me, he was explaining to me and being really nice about showing me the Kobo, which is what I came for.
My local indie is the tiny, cozy type with barely any breathing room and stacks and stacks of, well, the "stacks". The man who owns the store is wonderful and friendly.
Overall, Borders has my bet.

PS: I love your blog and the layout, but can I make a suggestion? The text color and size is really straining on the eyes. I had to rub my eyes a bit after reading that post, and I was squinting while I read it.Riv Rehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09385226727864037794noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5461857684201387821.post-27788312697406189262011-02-22T10:04:40.617-08:002011-02-22T10:04:40.617-08:00That is an interesting question. I think I'd ...That is an interesting question. I think I'd rather be left alone to wander and explore. On the other hand, it is incredibly frustrating to not be able to find someone when I do need help.Teresahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01337919035210017251noreply@blogger.com
