Book Blogger Hop

When you read a book that you just can't get into, do you stick it out and keep reading or move to your next title?

Wow, that's a great question, one that I haven't yet come up against as a reviewer.

In fact, the only reason I've 'given up' on books in the past was due to time constraints: the book was due back at the library or I had another requirement for school. Now that I'm running on my own schedule and truly reading for the fun of it... I don't know what I'd do.

However, here's what I think I'd do.

I give every book at least 50 pages to hook me.

After that...

If it's a book I own (either have bought myself, or won in a giveaway) and I can't get into it, I might put it down for a while. Maybe I'll pick it up again later, when I'm in a different mood. Maybe I'll try to power through it. Or, maybe I'll give up and give it away/sell it. It will probably depend on what 'the problem' is.

If I pick up a book from the library and just can't get into it, I'll probably return it without much guilt and simply not review it. I might revisit it if I have it recommended to me, or read a stellar review, but I'm not completely committed to completing or reviewing it.

If I was given a book specifically for review (from author, publisher, or an ARC) and I didn't like it, I think I'd push through anyway and finish it. The only reason I can see not finishing a book is if there's something in it that made me physically ill (detailed or extreme gore or sickness has made me nauseous in the past) and had nothing else that drew me in. I've never had an experience where I've hated a book, so I can't say how I'd react. But if it's a matter of boredom, not clicking, or slight discomfort with a book, I can and will most likely still finish it.

What about you?

  1. Wow! You've never hated a book?? Amazing. I've gotten to the point where I'll only give a book about 50 pages (and that's if I'm feeling generous) to grab me. If I can't get into it, for whatever reason, I don't read or review it. Maybe I'll come back to it, maybe not ...

    Have a great weekend!

  2. Well, I've never hated a book that I didn't have to read. For example, my entire sophomore year of high school was filled with the most depressing books imaginable. Taken one at a time, they probably wouldn't be too bad, but combined as they were (the year's theme was 'Man's Inhumanity To Man') it was near-torture. But as far as my own voluntary selections, no, I haven't hated a book.

  3. Happy Follow Friday!!! Hope you will stop by my blog too! My publisher and I are looking for a group of bloggers for a huge blog tour next year before the release of book two in my 'A Sense of Truth' series! We will be giving out a few more copies of The Thirteenth Chime (we can only give out so many, being open to e-books gives an upper hand) and are still open to all interviews and guest posts. We want to fill up the Amazon page with reviews and try to reach as many people as we can!!! Hope you might consider being a part of the team! Thank you either way!

    Sincerely,

  4. Hi there! Thank you so much for stopping by my book blog and following. I'm returning the favor now. :) I really like your style when it comes to reading books that don't hook you. I've never really come across a book/story I hated either, unless I was forced to read it for a class. The only things that comes to mind is Hemingway. I hated reading anything written by Hemingway because it seemed like I had to read "Hills Like White Elephants" twice a year since I was a freshman. Since then, I stay away from his work...Anyway, I'm really looking forward to your future posts! Have a great weekend. :)

  5. I've actually stopped reading a book because I had to return it to the library (Middlesex) and I was really enjoying it. I keep meaning to buy it, but just haven't yet. But I don't consider that one "not finished"... just on hold XD
