Book 2

It's supposed to be a happy day at the Magic Kingdom—the return of the teenaged holographic hosts. But things go very wrong when a sudden lightning storm disrupts the celebration, and Amanda's mysterious sister, Jez, disappears. The only clue is the sighting of a wild monkey in the Magic Kingdom during the storm. The mystery deepens as Finn is contacted by Wayne, an old man he hasn't heard from in months. Wayne tells Finn that there's trouble at the Animal Kingdom: the evil Overtakers have gained control of one of the computer servers that will be used to operate Daylight Holographic Imaging there. That means that if any of the holographic hosts fall asleep, they will go into comas—permanently.

Definitely much better than the first. There was more characterization in the first 2 chapters of this than there was the entire first book.

This story was much more confined. There was a strict time limit and life and death stakes, instead of weeks passing by before the story progressed. It just worked better overall.

Now, there were still a lot of questions left unanswered and inconsistencies from book 1 raised, but the majority of them didn't seem essential to the plot this time. Still don't know what witches and rhyming thoughts have to do with anything. And it's unclear whether or not there are good characters running around. There's talk of defeating Mickey, but we have yet to see any good characters, let alone the big mouse himself.

So, yeah, a stricter timeline, better characterization, more focus on problem solving, and a generally tighter storyline made this a much more engaging book. I am actually looking forward to the next book(s) now to see where Finn and crew head next.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
