The Mage in Black
~The Mage in Black~
Sabina Kane
Book 2

By Jaye Wells
Amazon ~ Powell's

Sabina Kane doesn't have the best track record when it comes to family. After all, her own grandmother, the leader of the vampire race, just tried to kill her. When she arrives in New York to meet the mage side of her family, the reunion takes the fun out of dysfunctional.

On top of that, the Hekate Council wants to use her as a pawn in the brewing war against the vampires. Her mission will take her into the bowels of New York's Black Light district, entangles her in mage politics, and challenges her beliefs about the race she was raised to distrust. And Sabina thought
vampires were bloodthirsty.

A nice, quick read following a tortuous series of ugh. You know, it's nice to be reading a book and actually enjoy what's going on. And it's another plus when the % complete ticker actually moves up at a decent pace. It took me 5 days to read this book, whereas the last took 5 months. And that book was YA!

But enough about that, what about this book? Well, like I said, it went by rather quickly, I don't have much to report. Things I would have expected to last longer just didn't. I expected to spend a lot more time with Sabina and her twin, maybe more on Sabina's magic training, but ultimately got more action and snark instead, which I can't really complain about. My only complaint, really, was knowing who the 'traitor' mage was from fairly early on, but that's fairly minor in the scheme of things.

These books just aren't interested in getting bogged down in the details. I was interested in knowing more about the werewolves that we meet here, what their origins are in this world, but for the little they featured, I got just enough to tide me over. Same way I would love to know the ins and outs of demon politics, but Sabina had Giguhl tutor her mainly off-page.

Is it just me, or is Sabina giving off kind of a Naruto feel? An oddball/outcast who somehow wins over anyone who meets her, making new connections between warring races... Eh, maybe it's just my imagination.

Finally got some sex in there, and maybe a hint of a love triangle, but not too much else to go into. Ready and raring to pick up the next book and see what ass kicking Sabina's planning next.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
